Essay number 7 is an informative essay/speech. Your job is to brainstorm to come up with a stellar topic you want to share with the class. Then you will write an organized speech to teach us more about this topic. You must include an introduction, a thesis, and you must use examples to support your points. You should also include a works cited page and have at least five sources. Finally, you must have a conclusion that reviews what you’ve just told us about.

In class, we will brainstorm topics and practice body paragraphs. We will work on specific examples and write rough drafts. Finally, we will prepare visual aids to enhance the speeches. Then it is up to you to practice and perfect your speech.

English 9 Debate Assignment

Debate Assignment

English 9

Debate makes up an important part of any public speaking unit. Skills in debating will help you no matter what you decide to do in the future. These skills are obviously hard to develop, but can be very rewarding and fun. For your assignment, you will research and present a debate in front of the class. Your goal is to utilize everything you learn during the unit, and from units previous this year—research skills, presentation skills, and debate and argumentative techniques.

With a partner, you will debate on a topic pre-selected for you. You will have time to research and plan with your partner. Before actually standing up in front of the class to debate, you will write a paper on your subject. This will serve as your next composition and will be due Tuesday, January 15. You will use your research and your typed arguments in your debate. You will debate one other group.

The format is standard (listed below). Your essay will be graded the same as every other essay this year. Your presentation will be graded on how well you debate, the issues you cover, whether or not you are prepared for opposing arguments, and your preparation (which means your typed case/essay).

Topics:

Resolved: A victim's deliberate use of deadly force is a just response to repeated domestic violence.

Resolved: A just government should provide health care to its citizens.

Resolved: That the quantity of credit available to American consumers should be significantly reduced.

Resolved: The costs of legalized casino gambling in the United States outweigh the benefits.

Resolved: That lobbyists negatively influence the legislative process in the United States.

Resolved: Current immigration laws in the United States should be enforced.

Resolved: That the benefits of NASA's space exploration programs justify the costs.

Resolved: the Death Penalty is an outmoded system of punishment that does more harm than good.

Resolved: No matter how high ranking the terrorist, it is unethical to torture them for information.

Resolved: TV and Print advertisements do more harm than good and should be tightly restricted.

Resolved: Because of the U.S.’s financial and political power, it has the responsibility to act as the world’s policeman.

Resolved: It is not morally acceptable to experiment on non humans to develop products beneficial to humans.

Format:

First speaker (team A) : 2 minutes

First speaker (team B) : 2 minutes

Crossfire : 2 minutes

Second speaker: (team A) 2 minutes

Second speaker (team B) 2 minutes
